Introduction. According to the international definition of the World Health Organization (WHO), lockdown is a preventive quarantine, which is an urgent protocol of action and a corresponding system of restrictive measures imposed to curb the spread of the disease. Social distancing measures can successfully slow the spread of viral infections and significantly alleviate the health care system, but they can ultimately increase the social isolation of young students and affect their psychological well-being and mental health in general.

The aim. Analysis of data on the assessment of the impact on the lives of students of higher education institutions in the epidemic.

Materials and methods of research. Analysis of domestic and foreign sources of scientific literature, information databases (Internet networks Medline, Pubmed, Medscape, etc.) to summarize data related to the research problem.

Results. The adopted conditions of quarantine and isolation to protect the physical health of people from infectious diseases have had consequences for the mental health of those who face these restrictions. People who have been quarantined during various outbreaks of infectious diseases have been reported to report adverse health effects after quarantine and isolation. To date, the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on the general mental health and sleep of higher education students has been studied in various countries around the world, namely China, Canada, Australia, France, the United States and Bangladesh. A systematic review and meta-analysis examined the effectiveness of psychological interventions for university students who are experiencing or at risk of developing common mental health problems such as anxiety and depression. The study found that cognitive and behavioral therapy was the most frequently studied intervention and was effective in treating depression and anxiety disorders in this population. Concomitant factors such as resilience have been shown to improve mental health outcomes among higher education students.

Conclusion. Social distancing measures are essential for protecting physical health, but less is known about the impact of such measures on mental health. A review of the psycho-hygienic effects of quarantine and isolation showed that such measures were associated with high levels of psychological stress, including symptoms of post-traumatic stress, anger and confusion, as well as high prevalence of low mood and irritability.

Key words: psychohygienic assessment, vital activity, students of higher education institutions.
