OCCUPATIONAL HEALTH AT THERMAL POWER PLANTS

Background. The potential of heat and power engineering of Ukraine is 44 power plants, of which 14 are large ones, using coal, natural gas, fuel oil and diesel fuel. Coal dominates in the general amount of mining, which is used mostly in production of electricity and heat. The total number of employees is about several thousands people. Thermal power plants (TPP) are most commonly used in Ukraine. Results. Main adverse factors, contributing lo high level of morbidity among workers of the TPP. arc noise, microclimate of industrial premises, heaviness and intensity of work, dust in the working zone air. Despite the great number of hygienic studies,conducted in the previous years, the effect of asbestos fibers,available in the dust mixture of a number of industrial premises ofTPP.was not taken into account. Different insulation materials arc widely used at thermal power plants, including synthetic and natural fibers, as well as asbestos. As a result of destruction of these materials in the working zone air thermal power plants can be contaminated with aerosols, containing artificial and natural mineral fibers, and so, can result in development of pathological changes in the health of workers of boiler-turbine shops, which, most of their lime, are engaged in the maintenance of the technological equipment of these shops. Conclusions. Taking into account the actuality oft he problem of elimination of asbestos-related diseases, one of important problems of occupational health nowa¬days is elimination of asbestos fibers in the thermal insulation from the working zone air and development of the system of measures lor prevention of the effect of asbestos on the worker's health.
